I encountered something similar, caused by the "complexity" of an XPath expression, over six months ago (see <http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc2629xslt/rfc2629xslt.html#rfc.section.5.1>, Bug 245725). As far as I can tell, there has been no progress on that.
