The dtd defaults the attribute, so the attribute appears in teh source
unless you change (a copy of) the dtd.

However attributes only appear in the result if you put them there, so
if you don't want them, don't put them there.

For example if they are getting there because you are going
<xsl:copy-of select="@*"/>
then instead go
<xsl:copy-of select="@* except xml:space"/>
