It depends what you want to do but it may be easiest to do <xsl:for-each-group seelct="verse" group-starting-with="verse[not(@part) or @part='beginning']"> <xsl:for-each select="current-group()"> .... <xsl:value-of select="position()"/> and a test on last() being 1 2 or bigger than 2 give the tests you ask for.
