Thanks everyone for the insight. I'll be passing the library XML in as a parameter as suggested to make the code more modular. Luck is on my side here for performance as the project this is being applied to is a legacy content (Framemaker and Excel spreadsheets (used as indexes)) conversion to PDF (1000+ page manual). It is a test workflow project (but the test will produce a manual for a client) and all the string manipulation can be done once on the lot of files and only on newer files after that.
