Emacs, for example, has psgml-xpointer (from David Megginson) which does the same using a TEI-style xpointer notation. My copy is bound in .emacs to M-x wtf-ami[...] And of course in various context like Schematron people have written XSLT functions or templates to construct a path before XPath 3 introduced a function for that.
