Dear List,

With the promising progress with XSLT 4.0 on the one side and the
relentless march of AI on the other, these are interesting times for
XSLT developers indeed.

In this context, I'm pleased to announce our latest update for VS
Code's extension for XSLT/XPath - Release 2.0.0.

This is a major release with many improvements, it's been over a year
since our last update. A significant part of the work for this release
was dedicated to extending and updating language support for XSLT
4.0/XPath 4.0 - as implemented in Saxon 13. I'll focus on XSLT 4.0 as
this has been my favourite part of the work, but there are many new
features too of course that benefit XSLT 3.0 users or those preparing
to migrate to XSLT 4.0.

The new XSLT 4.0 record and enum and JNode types along with
<xsl:switch/> are of particular interest for me.

The highlight for me though is the <xsl:note> instruction - allowing
us to add descriptions for all our types, modules, functions and
templates etc. to surface them in a more usable way for the developer
(human or otherwise).

For this, we're introducing a new code documenting format 'xdoc-md' -
based on the xqdoc tags but we're using Markdown as the method for
highlighting descriptions. Whenever you hover on a typed symbol,
function, module etc. any documentation for this will be shown along
with other symbol-specific data, such as a function signature or an
enum's values.

If you'd like to try out XSLT 4.0 with this extension you just need VS
Code, our extension and a licensed copy of Saxon-PE/EE.

This update is now available for installation on the VS Code
