Subject: New Washington State University Copyright Web Site From: Marc Lindsey <lindseym@xxxxxxx> Date: Wed, 03 Dec 2003 10:31:14 -0800 |
Washington State University has just posted a new web site on copyright law as it applies to higher education. Please visit the site at: http://publishing.wsu.edu/copyright/index.html The site features a plain english narrative explaining the common copyright issues that arise in higher education. The text is supported by click-on footnotes to legal authority. Also embellishing the visual and entertainment appeal are several photos copied and posted in the site legally under applicable copyright law. Topics include: - what is and what is not protected by copyright. - how copyright protects works under civil and criminal statutory law. - Public Domain including a link to the Hirtle/Gasaway chart and list of web sites offering public domain copyright-free materials. - getting permission: why, how and where to get it. - Fair Use: an attempt to explain the doctrine in laymen's terms and relatively simple instructions in how to apply it. - perils of downloading music and movies without license. - rules that apply to libraries Topics In Progress: - TEACH Act and distance education - copyright as it applies to music. - copyright as it applies to the Internet The site is hosted by Marc Lindsey, author of Copyright Law On Campus (WSU Press 2003) Thanks, Marc Lindsey Copyright Specialist Washington State University
