Assuming he has authorization to include the article in the course, unless  
there is something in the license to the contrary,  I would not think  he's 
required to use the entire article; he might therefore identify the  
included "portion" as an "excerpt" from the original and clearly indicate where  
material has been omitted by the compiler.
