"Crayons, Computers and Copyright:B Making Sense of Copyright Opportunities in
K-12 teaching"Dates: June 6-17, 2011

Copyright is many things to many people. Some loathe it, some love it, some
tolerate it, all have to manage it. Copyright plays a central role in K-12
education, but confusion about the law thrives in myths and misunderstandings
surrounding
how it works. Managing copyright and meeting the needs of
students is, well, manageable with an understanding of some basic principles
and practical applications. "Copyright IS ?" ... will serve as the broad
foundation for this course. Discussion will concentrate on learning some
introductory principles, identifying the role of copyright in K-12 and
education generally, and demystifying copyright for use in the classroom and
beyond.
The broad and central themes in the course will include:B B What is
copyright and how do you get it?
How can teachers serve the needs of students and manage copyright in
teaching?
Are copyright policies helpful and what are important policy
considerations?
The core content and discussion will focus on understanding the exclusive
protections of copyrighted works and how to use specific exceptions to those
rights and other strategies to make teaching and learning possible. Some
important exceptions in copyright include "fair use" and other opportunities
address libraries and teaching in the classroom and the digital realm. Each of
these facets can also raise policy considerations and suggest choices for
developing local approaches to
understanding and managing copyright. The
course goals will involve:Identifying key terms and basic principles of the
law in order to recognize when and if copyright might affect your teaching
efforts.
Understanding fair use and its role in making materials available to
students and others.
Exploring possibilities for using media in the classroom and outside
of it, including digital technologies.
Assessing the role of policies in implementing a shared understanding
of copyright and how to apply it in teaching.
