Can somebody tell me exactly what is going on in all the 

VSync EQU $00
VBlank EQU $01
etc etc etc

at the beginning of the programs?  I mean, I realize these are all 
registers; are you just setting the addresses for each for the assembler? 
 And what the heck is DS?  As in 

Temp0 DS 1
Temp1 DS 1
