Subject: [stella] Atari 7800 checksum algorithm From: Paul Hart <hart@xxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 16:36:47 -0700 (MST) |
As I was thinking about how to subvert the digital signature algorithm in the Atari 7800, I thought of another possible avenue of attack. What hashing algorithm does the 7800 use when calculating the checksum of the cartridge data to compare it to the encrypted hash upon decryption? Could it be possible to take an existing signature (encrypted hash) from a real cartridge and doctor up a different cartridge so as to have an identical hash? If the hashing algorithm is not cryptographically secure, it may very well be possible to do?so.
