I started working on music to imitate Ballblazer and then MULE from the
Atari 8-bits this winter and got extremely frustrated.  Some melodies (like
4 bars of Hall of the Mountain King.... or the Pac Man theme ;) ) lend
themselves well to the 2600 and others.... don't.  Depends on the
intervals, I guess, and whether you can find a waveform/key signature
compromise that works for them.  Anything funky, jazzy or even bluesy you
can pretty much forget because the scales get completely munged.  

I think you could get halfway decent drum machine type effects going by
playing with envelopes though.  That and a bass line may be all you need
for a Parappa kind of thing.  To put it in perspective, certainly it's
possible to recreate just about any sound effect you ever heard in the
arcades circa 1980, though some of them may require all your cycles ;)
