OK, I got the entire programming seminar on videotape. (Lee, Joe, you
remember that clunky 180-lb. monstrousity I was lugging around? I had that
thing resting on my shoulder during the whole seminar. I still have a
pinched nerve.)
<<
Just a little background...
There was supposed to have been a much more substantial "intro to 2600
programming" in Stella at 20. I bugged Joe Decuir about recording a
voiceover describing the 2600 hardware for about two years to no avail.
Lots of false promises. Eventually he agreed to kill two birds with one
stone with his keynote presentation at CGE. But I didn't have a videocamera
at the time. It was very last-minute. This was, I believe, the 99 CGE.
I found a guy who shot the footage, didn't get his name, gave him my contact
info. He agreed to loan me his master tape (just as others lent out their
camera master of Jay Miner, I'm trustworthy). Of course, nothing became of
that.
So from what I hear, this year's presentation was quite good, and could be
the basis of a 3rd tape. I wouldn't be able to give it the same packaging
as v1 and v2. Volume would be pretty small, but since the overhead would be
less, I'd price it purely to break even within a reasonable timeframe.
As for the content, I'd take Joe Decuir's talk and cut away to animated
diagrams most of the time, and I'd add in any missing material it would take
to make it complete. I'd have to take a look at the rest of the session to
see how it might cut together.
I really am surprised that Joe returned this year. I didn't see him on the
guest list. So the way I treat this is never to count on a repeat
presentation. So even if the source material is a little ragged, I'd go
ahead and try to make something of it.
So that's the idea.
The only way it will be practical is if there is enough interest, and if
people volunteer to lend me their tapes.
But I think with Mike Mika's 2600 programming book coming out, the video
would be a good companion piece.
Opinions?
