Instead of a repositioning loop, you could do some 15 different kernels RESPing at the precise cycles where the loop would do it.

That's what I meant, but I don't think you'd need that many positioning routines. Each routine can be set up to position the sprite in one of several places. If you can make it so each routine positions the sprite in 1 of 3 places, you're already down to just needing 5 different positioning routines.
