I agree with this completely.

What if, instead of breaking through walls as a matter of course, there would be a power-up and/or the previously mentioned turbo buttons that would temporarily boost your speed or "hardness" and allow you to break through walls "for a while" (a timer or maybe until you hit the side walls?). You might get bonus points for every wall broken... So instead of avoiding walls you now want to seek them out...

Maybe collecting the powerup would a be non-trivial - Like collecting the letters to spell a word (Zoom?) in order (getting a letter out of order would make you start over). Or some other sequence of icons...
