Pragmatically, we're talking about 20+year-old electronics!  Why stress
them out?  Slap a buffer on there, and give them a break!  It's not
tough.  Just make sure you have the right resistor on the LED to limit
the current.

Frank helped me work out a solid circuit design using a transistor to switch the signal. I'm going to try it out tonight and I'll post a schematic and maybe some source when I get it working.
