I've had some experience in this field. Here's what I can tell you works for
me:
I use the buddyAPI to copy files or execute installers. You can find it at
www.mods.com.au.
To detect directX I check the registry + if can find a few DLLs in the
system directory. (with the buddyAPI again).
For Virtools, I check if the registry key exists, if not I trigger the
installer with the buddyAPI.
I can't check if the user has a 3D card though, so I rely on the Virtools
software rendering to kick in if no HW acceleration is available and warn
the user about very slooowww playback. I don't play any composition if I
detect a MAC or Windows NT4.x as directX 3.x doesn't use direct 3D, only
direct draw.
The only winge I have about all this is the endless series of dialog boxes
you have to go through to install the stand alone player. Especially the one
that says "It is recommended to close all running applications before
running this installer". When can we get a silent install?
Hope this helps.

I like to ask the user group for some feedback and experiences about
distributing Director-Apps including an ActiveX component
(VirtoolsAX.ocx).
The installer copies cmo-file to harddisk and ActiveX member loads from
there.
The installer copies VirtoolsAX.ocx to harddisk beside the Director
executables.
The installer starts VirtoolsWebPlayer placed on CD-ROM.
Any experinces what else to regard?
What about:
A routine called from Lingo, which checks if users graphic hard/software
is compatible with VirtoolsWebPlayer minimum requirements. Anyone who
worked on this.
DirectX installation: Do we have to to think about (many) computers with
DirectX compatible graphic cards which not have DirectX compatible
version installed? Does the VirtoolsWebPlayer installer checks if DX is
installed? Should we include an DX-installer on the CD-ROM?
Regards
Klaus
