[Virtools] picking 2D entities on a 2D frame with the keyboard

hi all,

what is the most straightforward way to implement the selection of 2D
entities on a 2D frame? as of now, i have a dynamically created group of 2D
elements (e.g. inventory items) that are displayed on a 2D frame using the
'FlowLayout2D' BB. i've tried a few things, but none of them seem to work.
last thing i tried was moving a 'selection image' under the images (each
entity as a transparent frame for the selection image to "highlight") but
the selection image wasn't locked onscreen and for some reason the Z sorting
wasn't working properly. (i moved the selection image to the start of the 2D
frame with Set 2D Position, but it was on top of the 1st 2D entity, despite
having a Z value of 128, whereas all the 2D entities had 255)

i'm not asking for too many specifics, just something to get me going in a
good direction to picking and highlighting 2D entities without using the
mouse.
