Hello everyone. Having taken over the documentation
since Dev 2.5, I'll step in.
First: in the debate of pdf versus book.... Books
are slow to produce, very expensive as they must be produced in large numbers,
and increase shipping costs. PDFs can be modified quickly and cheaply,
downloaded or supplied on the CD, and are searchable and printable.... (You
currently get both, unless you upgraded, at which point a pdf is
provided....)
VSL is not currently in the User Guide since the
User Guide covers basic concepts that remain essentially the same as for the
2.1. Due to the high cost of book production and since VSL is not a beginner's
topic, we focused on the Dev 2.5 Online Reference as the primary reference
source for VSL. I won't deny the VSL
section needs alot of work - it is still a draft as far as I am concerned
- and it didn't get all the time it needed. But we need criticism to be
discussed in a level beyond "it's bad" or "it should be printed." Venting is not
going to help make a better documentation.
We need feedback to evaluate how future
documentation should be structured... There are clear omissions (and known bugs)
that will be added/fixed with the patch, which we are preparing, and the endless
tables are difficult to navigate.
There is a debate about reproducing information
that is already covered in the SDK documentation... Coders tend to be against,
since using advanced VSL requires getting acquainted with the SDK and its
documentation... Non-coders may appreciate the redundancy though...
Constructive feedback on the documentation is
always, always highly appreciated! Please send them to doc@virtools.com or to the VUG since
it's easier for me to follow than the Forums (which I can only get to
sporadically).
Best regards,
Frederique KRUPA
