try removing the opening and closing braces when u substitute the 
variable name .

 <xsl:template match="rs:data">
    <xsl:variable name="caption"><xsl:value-of 
 select="."/></xsl:variable>    <TABLE>
          <th><INPUT TYPE="BUTTON" VALUE="$caption"
 sortfld="date(@TradeDate)"/></th>
    </TABLE>
 </xsl:template>
