I should of said I am using the Microsoft XSL parser. So how would do it

The example of colouring alternating rows of a table is in the xslt
spec. There are other examples in the faq.

<xsl:when test="position() mod 2 = 0"> do this ...
<xsl:otherwise> do something else> ....
