Or more portably you could use the string-replace named template posted to this list a couple of times and replace 'mm' by ' * 1 ' 'pt' by ' * 2 ' etc where 1, 2 , are whatever the right conversion factors are to convert everything to some common unit (eg pt). then you can evaluate as an xpath number expression, and stick 'pt' on the result.
