It doesn't need to. Just use <xsl:for-each> to make the relevant node
current:
<xsl:variable name="monthNumber">
<xsl:for-each select="document('')//foo:month[@name = $monthName]">
<xsl:number/>
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:variable>
