disable-output-escaping is having no effect here, that only affects <
and &.

You only need the <xsl:text> at all if you only want to output a tab.
ie the situation is exactly same as outputting a space, if the text node
in your stylesheet contains more than just white space then it will be
output, but if it is all white it will be stripped and you need xsl:text

<xsl:template match="xxx">
<xsl:text>    </xsl:text>
1	2

will output
