I think it's to do with these characters here

And the other ones in your file. I had to run some files containing german
text through the HTML Tidy utility from
http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy/ with "Output Numerical Character
Entities" set to on to turn them into &#xxx; where xxx is the character
code.
