XPath help

["edmund mitchell" <edmund_mitchell@xxxxxxxxxxx>]

Hello all
I would like to process a given element if the value in it's 'name' 
attribute is not duplicated by the value of any _other_ element's 'name' 
attribute elsewhere in the document.
I frightened the dog from the room with:
test="@name[not(//*/@name[not(self::*)])]"
No more newbie struggles- it's time to consult the masters...
