A common mistake is to go <xsl:variable name="path" select="a/b/c"/> instead of <xsl:variable name="path" select="'a/b/c'"/> the second defines path to be string a/b/c suitable for use as the URI in the document() function. The first defines path to be the mode set selected by the XPath a/b/c (which may well be empty).
