<xsl:if test="$node-element">
<xsl:value-of select="$node-element" />
</xsl:if>
</xsl:template>
is just
<xsl:template name="opt_template">
<xsl:param name="node"/>
<xsl:value-of select=".//*[local-name() = $node]" />
</xsl:template>
