Time has come to add XPath support at the DOM level. Check http://www.w3.org/TR/DOM-Requirements/#Level-3-LS-Other-Requirements 4.4.4.3 Document Fragments "XPath should also be considered as a way to identify XML Document fragments to load." Maybe a bit of lobbying or help to the people in the DOM group would be the right way.
