Or even more unlikely, that your processor supports XPointer fragment
identifiers. Such an implementation would allow you to have full access to
dynamic XPath expressions (thus breaking one of the design goals of the
spec?)

or, if you are really lucky your processor will accept the data: URI
scheme (do any) in which case you could go

<xsl:variable name="x" select="document(data:text/xml,{$string})"/>

where $string is a variable with the XML as a string (or you could put
any XPath expression to select that instead of $string}
