what about:

<xsl:template match="customer">
  <xsl:element name="MYCustomer">
    <xsl:attribute name="ID" select="@ID"/>
  </xsl:element>
</xsl:template>

or simply add {}:

<MYCustomer ID="{$myvar}" />
