Specifically the syntax for parameters in XSL is verbode, even by the standards of XML, so anything that calls a template with a couple or more parameters looks far worse than it is. Howver this is just surface syntax, if you think of the template call as f(x,y) then you'll see that the overhead isn't really very much in the recursive call.
