Doh.

OK, the preferred method is to use namespace-alias:

<xsl:namespace-alias stylesheet-prefix="simon" result-prefix="xsl"/>

and then your xsl looks like this

<xsl:template match="/">
<simon:template match="whatever">....

much cleaner.
