A method for doing this is using <xsl:attribute> as follows:

<xsl:template match="Message">
    <input type="hidden" name="id">
        <xsl:attribute name="value"><xsl:value-of select="@id"/></xsl:attribute>
    </input>
</xsl:template>
=============================================

A bit verbose, but I do this all the time.  Just think of XSLT as
an "assembly language" for tree-walking not a general-purpose
programming language.
