[xsl] Text output and whitespace

When using output="text", what level of control do I have over the
whitespacing?  I need to output to a whitespace sensitive text format, and
having extra line breaks and space padding is a problem.  Do I have that
sort of control?  If so, is there anything special that needs be done?
