The character _is_ a non breaking space but obviously if you use the wrong encoding it looks like arbitrary characters. Either write your output in latin1 using <xsl:output encoding="iso-8859-1"/> or view your file in an application that understands utf8. Note that all XML applications will handle utf8, but not all of them will handle latin1.
