Even when you are not switching documents, it is useful to use
variables.  Try:

<xsl:template match="elementX">
<xsl:variable name="x" select="." />
<xsl:for-each select="$a">
<xsl:value-of select="./@AnAttribute[../@DifferentAttribute=
$x/@AttributeFromX]"/>

If you were using apply-templates instead of for-each, then pass
parameters.
