If you went
<xsl:variable name="y_offset" select="20"/>
then you would save the system casting the variable from a result tree
to a string to a number, it would just be the number 20 to start with,
but you'd get the same result:
<path d="M 35, {$y_offset} + 25 ....
You want to evaluate the + as well as teh variable reference, so:
<path d="M 35, {$y_offset + 25} ....
