All existing XSLT processors construct a tree representation of the source document in memory, so for a 400 Mb document, you are going to need a lot of memory. It's best to break it up and transform it one piece at a time. Sometimes Saxon's <saxon:preview> feature is a convenient way of doing this. But you can also do it by writing a SAX filter application which turns the big document into lots of small documents for transformation purposes.
