It should be: <xsl:sort select="string-length(substring-before('JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec', substring(date,4,3)))" data-type="number" /> ^ extra bracket here When you get errors like that, try running with another processor that might give you a more helpful error message. In this case, I used Saxon and it said: Error at xsl:sort on line 40 .....
