If many books authors were unable to give you a satisfying
answer may I suggest you looks at the specifications themselves,
they are the normative and hence authoritative descriptions of both
technologies:
- DTDs are described in the XML specification
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml#elemdecls
- Schemas are described as a pair of specs plus a "primer"
