Using multiple elements with different grouping keys shouldn't be a problem, because you can declare multiple <xsl:key> elements with the same name and you effectively get the union of all of them. Grouping across documents is more tricky, because the scope of a key is restricted to one document. You probably have to build the composite document as a temporary tree and then do grouping on that.
