Of course I was confused by trying to follow Jeni's suggestion and use
long multi-letter variable names like "x2" I should have stuck to my
original intention of using x and y...

<xsl:apply-templates select="*[1]"/>
</xsl:variable>
<xsl:variable name="y">
<xsl:apply-templates select="*[2]"/>
</xsl:variable>
<xsl:value-of select="$x*$y"/>
