actually the saxon documentation gives the following example for
xsl:variable...
<xsl:variable name="title">A really exciting document"</xsl:variable>
<xsl:variable name="backcolor" expr="'#FFFFCC'" />
<xsl:template match="/*">
<HTML><TITLE<xsl:value-of select="$title"/></TITLE>
<BODY BGCOLOR='{$backcolor}'>
...
</BODY></HTML>
</xsl:template>
also, Saxon doesnt throw out
<xsl:variable name="x" expr="    ......"/>
but it *does* throw out
<xsl:variable name="x" select="    ......"/>
as an *Unexpected EOF*
