doesn't the match="pattern" gets only the level=1" patterns??? and match="//patterns" get's all of them??
No, absolutely not. "pattern" matches any <pattern> element. "//pattern" matches any <pattern> element that is a descendant of the root node. All elements are descendants of the root, so both match exactly the same elements. If you want to match <pattern> elements that are at "level 1" (ie. children of <doc>), write match="/*/pattern".
