Here is your bug:

>        <xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>

try something like:
<xsl:template match="section/p[position()=1]">
   <p class="firstsentence">
      <xsl:copy-of select="@*[local-name()!='class'"/>
      <xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
   </p>
</xsl:template>
