The values of the request parameters are passed as strings, so the only way to pass more than one value is to have a delimited string. For example: .../search?search=a,b would pass the value "a,b" as the value of the $search parameter. You could then split that string up in order to process it. But try it out -- it might be that you can do: .../search?search=a&search=b and the $search parameter be set to a node set containing two text nodes whose values are 'a' and 'b' respectively, but frankly I doubt it.
