Oops. If you move the sort element to the second template then I guess
you'd have to put it inside a for-each. Something like this:

<xsl:apply-templates
select="document('clientes_ora.xml')/clientes_ora/registro |
document('clientes_sqlsrv.xml')/clientes_sqlsrv/registro">
</xsl:apply-templates>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="registro">

<xsl:sort select="nome"/>
<b><xsl:number value="position()"/>-<xsl:value-of select="nome"/></b>
<br/>
<xsl:value-of select="endereco"/>-<xsl:value-of select="cidade"/>
<br/><br/>
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:template>
