Thank you very much; that was it;  the empty tag omits the section and a
<xsl:template match="*|@*|text()">
   <xsl:copy>
     <xsl:apply-templates select="*|@*|text()" />
   </xsl:copy>
 </xsl:template>
copies the rest.
Now new-years party can start :-))
