Thanks, I didn't catch placing the normalize-space() _inside_ the AVT. Now that you point it out, it seems obvious.

The effort to replace the Oracle XSL processor inside Oracle 9iAS is too daunting to consider, so I will file another bug report with Oracle.

if your id attribute is of type ID then the space will be ignored by an
XML parser anyway so wouldn't be seen when the file was processed,

however to get rid of the space you could

report a bug to your processor implementor and get it fixed or
use a different processor or use
id="m.{normalize-space($id)}"
